Team Papa’s Pace

Rusty, Papa Rusty, & Tracy

Odyssey Fall Finale 24-Hour Adventure Race (10/16-17):

“Team Papa’s Pace” finished the 24-hour West Virginia race in a little over 23 hours,

starting at 11:30am on Sat, Oct. 16 and finishing at 10:43am on Sun, Oct. 17, and placing 1st in their division.

The team included BSPT members Rusty Fancher and Tracy Darensbourgh with Rusty’s dad, “Papa Rusty”.

Tracy’s report:

“The course was unsupported, and you had to be self-sufficient which included carrying all of your own nutrition and water.  If you ran out of water, you had to fill-up with river water and drop in your iodine tabs, hoping for the best.  There was a lot of mandatory gear and a surprise gear check on the course.  The first leg consisted of a 15-17 mile canoe.  We learned a valuable lesson: DONT BRING A SCANOE.  It is basically a flat bottom canoe, but twice as heavy, twice as wide, and twice as slow.  We were passed like we were sitting still.  Literally, we were second to last out of the water. The only reason we weren’t last was that the other boat had a hole in it, haha.  Our bikes had to be carried in the boats which added to the drag.  After the river ride we jumped on the bikes and spent the next few hours finding check points scattered in and around the town of Buchanan.  The rest of the course was a good mix of biking and hiking. We had 10 mandatory points we had to find and several optional ones (extra credit).  There was A LOT of hill climbing on the bike and hike, but overall it was a blast.  Our official time was 23 hours and 10min; we came in first place in our division.”

BSPT was represented well on Oct 2-3 at the Giant Acorn International and Sprint distance triathlons! It was a beautiful race weekend.
